The defender is suspended for Sunday's game at Getafe anyway

Barcelona defender Eric Garcia will undergo surgery on a thumb injury, the Catalan club confirmed on Thursday.

Garcia was set to miss Saturday's game at Getafe through suspension anyway, with Barça then only having one more game left, at home to Villarreal next week.

"Eric Garcia has injured his right thumb and requires surgery," Barça said in a short statement after training.

"Dr Xavier Mir will perform the operation [on Friday] under supervision of the FC Barcelona Medical Services. A new medical announcement will be made once the operation is complete."

Garcia, 21, returned to Barça from Manchester City last summer and has made 36 appearances in all competitions this season.
