Barcelona decide to sell Sergi Roberto
The midfielder is not wanted any longer at Camp Nou and has a year left on his deal
Joan Laporta has started to take important decisions for next season. Sergi Roberto is not wanted at Barcelona, SPORT has learned.
The midfielder-cum-right-back is considered one of the ‘sacred cows’ in the dressing room but Laporta is looking to shake up the squad.
The club believe his time at Barca has ended and he only has a year left on his contract. So Sergi Roberto, 29, will be one of the first players to pay the consequences for the last few years of poor results.
Of course, his departure is subject to the interests of other clubs in his services. If he does not agree to leave then he will be a free agent from next summer, open to sign for other teams from Jan 1, 2022.
Sergi Roberto has only played 1,198 minus this season, having played over 3,000 in each of the past four. He has not played so little since 2014-15, when Barca won the treble and Dani Alves was there.
