Barcelona betting on the contract renewal of Marcos Alonso

The left back has done well playing in the centre of defence

Barcelona’s operations in the winter market might be hit by salary limits and priorities are on renewing players they already have. As well as Alejandro Balde, whose renewal is on track, Marcos Alonso is another player the club want to keep.

They will try and reach a deal to extend his contract in January. He wants to stay and the staff like his versatility.

He arrived late in the transfer window and took a big pay cut to come to Camp Nou.

Barcelona want to extend his one year deal by a further two seasons, in a one plus one deal, whereas he would like two straight up.

There is not likely to be problems with both sides wanting to reach an agreement.

With Alonso and Balde being tied down the duo have Barcelona’s left back slot secured for when Jordi Alba leaves. And Alonso’s performances at centre-back might lead to the club not replacing Pique in January.

Most likely is that Inigo Martinez comes in next summer at the end of his deal with Athletic Bilbao.
