Barcelona, against their curse of finals in Seville

Barcelona, against their curse of finals in Seville

The Catalans have not had good luck in the Andalusian city over the years

Barcelona are looking for their first trophy of the Ronald Koeman era, the Spanish Super Cup. It will be the fourth time they play for a trophy in the city, this time at La Cartuja, after previously losing at the Sanchez Pizjuan and Benito Villamarin.

Both more recent experiences were bad ones. The first, against Steaua Bucharest in 1986 in the European Cup, was tough to swallow. They headed to Seville after defeating Goteborg with enormous suffering in the semis, and they were convinced this time they would lift the trophy. However, on May 7, they drew 0-0 after 90 minutes against Steaua and it went to extra-time and penalties. Alexanko, Pedraza, Pichi Alonso and Marcos Alonso missed from the spot and the Romanians won.

It was not until 1992, when Koeman scored the winner, that they lifted the European Cup.

Then in May 2019 they went back to Seville to play Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.

Marcelino Garcia Toral’s side won 2-1 with goals from Rodrigo and Gameiro. Messi hit back but it was not enough.

They also played the Copa del Rey final there back in 1925 at the Reina Victoria de Sevilla stadium. They won 2-0 with Samitier and Sancho scoring. Ralph Kirby, the Englishman, was in charge of Barca at the time.
