Paulinho and Denis Suarez were also on target as Barca made it five wins from five in La Liga, temporarily moving seven points clear of Real Madrid.

Eibar started brightly and Marc-Andre ter Stegen made early saves from Sergi Enrich and Inui before Barca took the lead.

The impressive Nelson Semedo drew a penalty after a one-two with Andres Iniesta and Messi scored from the spot.

Paulinho added the second — and his second in as many games — when he headed home from a Denis Suarez corner before half-time.

Denis added the third in the second half after Messi had been denied following a lovely dummy from Paulinho.

Eibar briefly got back into the game when Enrich poked home from a cross, but Messi quickly restored Barca’s three goal lead.

Iniesta and Sergio Busquets were involved in the build up and Messi produced the calmest of finish to score his second of the night.

Paulinho then set up Messi for his hat-trick, before substitute Aleix Vidal laid on the Argentine’s fourth of the night.

Messi now has nine goals in just five La Liga outings and Barcelona have established an early grip on top spot.
