Barcelona 2-3 Athletic Bilbao: Williams screamer in extra-time, Messi off

The Argentine star was sent off at the end after Griezmann's double and an Athletic comeback

An Inaki Williams screamer and Lionel Messi’s red card were the dramatic moments in extra-time which summed up Athletic Bilbao’s Spanish Super Cup win over Barcelona.

Antoine Griezmann’s brace looked to have handed the Catalans a 14th victory in the competition but Athletic hit back to get their third.

Oscar de Marcos struck between Griezmann’s strikes and Asier Villalibre netted in the 90th minute.

Jordi Alba contributed to all four goals, helping set up Barca’s and making defensive mistakes for Athletic’s.

He wasn’t to blame, though, for what proved to be the winner, with Williams smashing home three minutes into extra-time. It was a brilliant goal, from distance, finding the top corner and leaving Marc-Andre ter Stegen with no chance.

Barca created no chances in extra-time and Messi, who had a quiet game, hit out at Villalibre in the final minute and earned his first Barca red card. He will likely miss four matches now.

“We believed in ourselves, it all comes from having heart and having faith,” said Williams. “We had to work hard, which is what Athletic is about, not giving up, I think we are fair winners of this trophy.”
