Muller and Lewandowski (two) got the goals at Camp Nou in a disappointing performance for the hosts

It wasn’t 8-2 but it wasn’t much better. Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski got the goals as Bayern Munich thrashed Barcelona in a chastening Champions League opener at Camp Nou for the Catalans.

Muller’s shot deflected in off Eric Garcia, to open the scoring in the 34th minute. Barcelona had started well, but faded and Bayern’s attacking mechanisms began to flourish.

Lewandowski doubled the lead early in the second half, netting with a poacher’s finish after the electric Musiala hit the post.

After that Bayern were coasting, and Ronald Koeman threw the youngsters on.

Gavi and Balde impressed particularly, while Philippe Coutinho was also bright on his comeback from injury.

However, it wasn’t enough to please the 40,000 Camp Nou crowd, who whistled Sergi Roberto among others.

It was a torrid time for him and others, including Garcia, and it got worse when Gnabry hit the post and Lewandowski struck again, for his 75th Champions League goal.

At least Benfica were held to a 0-0 draw by Dinamo Kiev in the other Group E match…
