Barca were unable to get a win when they badly needed it

La Liga is not over for Barcelona but it’s not far from it either.

They could not get the win they needed at home against Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou, with Ousmane Dembele, Lionel Messi and Ilaix Moriba coming close but not smoking any cigars.

At the other end Luis Suarez mis-kicked when he might have pounced, with Atletico unable to press home and extend their lead significantly at the top of the league either.

This puts the title in Real Madrid’s hands. Win their last four games, win the league.

“It’s a shame as we wanted the three points to try and stay in the fight for La Liga, but we have to continue,” said Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.

“There are three games to go, there’s a lot at stake and we will play these games to try and win the title.”

Ronald Koeman watched on from in the presidential box, still banned, and if he fell asleep in the first half he could not be blamed. The match was slow, partly Atletico’s doing and partly Barca’s impotence in chance creation.

The visitors were better after Sergio Busquets went off injured, although Barcelona recovered their poise in the second half, without making it count.

Ilaix had an effort blocked, Messi fired over a free kick and substitute Dembele headed over when he could have scored.

Over to Madrid, who go top if they beat Sevilla on Sunday.
