Barca's problem with the Liga salary limits

The Catalans have to reduce their wage bill ASAP

One of the headaches for Joan Laporta’s board is the salary limit imposed by La Liga. Barcelona have a high wage bill.

“Today we have a salary level at 110% of the foreseen incomes,” said Laporta. “It has to be adjusted and we have to work in the opposite direction, we have to work to meet FFP requirements.”

They have to reduce their salary level by 47.1%, from 656 million to 347 million.

“Barca have not done badly, if it wasn’t for the pandemic they would not have to reduce 45% of their salary,” said Javier Tebas. “Covid-19 has taken away a lot of their income.”

La Liga, aware that it is going to be a complicated summer, has established a rule that clubs can reinvest, in raising 25% of the capital gain from transfers and the savings they get by getting wages off the books.

In a recent event, Tebas was convinced that Laporta will manage to square the numbers. “Barcelona's management is on the right track. The current ‘managers’, from their experience, know that the norm does not change and they are making great efforts to lower their salary bill. We cannot make a rule for Messi, another for Haaland, he said.
