Barça's Gerard Pique makes his referendum position clear: We will vote

The Barcelona defender tweeted his support for the independence referendum

However, he has never said if he is pro or anti independence for the region

Gerard Pique has spoken about the refereundum on Catalan independence, expressing his desire for the vote to take place on Sunday.

The Spanish government say the referendum is illegal and are trying to stop it.

That has led to the detainment of several Catalan officials, while a number of buildings were also raided.

In turn, the Catalan people have taken to the streets on mass and plan to vote on their future as an independent state on Sunday.

Pique's message was clear and brave: ""From today until Sunday we should express ourselves peacefully. Don't give them any excuse. It's what they want. And sing high and strong. #Votarem (We will vote)."

However, it should be pointed out that Pique is in favour on handing Catalonia the right to vote on its future, not necessarily of independence.

It's the same position Barcelona have took. Last week they condemned the Spanish government's decision to raid official buildings and make arrests.

Barça play Las Palmas at Camp Nou on the same day as the referendum.
