Barca's football professionals believe in Ronald Koeman

Joan Laporta’s silence of Ronald Koeman’s future has only served to weaken the coach’s position at the club. He has a contract until June 2022, but the club is in limbo right now, with Xavi in talks.

There are six days left before the last game of the season and nobody knows who will lead the revolution Barcelona need next term.

Reality, however, is stubborn. Right now Koeman is more out than in. If he didn’t back him publicly after the Copa del Rey win, what do we have to think after the team collapsed in the Liga run-in?

We also have to wonder, should the president of a club like Barcelona be the one who decides unilaterally the fate of the coach, aka the whole project? Should it not be an expert who takes that decision?

Where is the sporting director? Mateu Alemany is director of football and Ramon Planes the technical secretary and highly valued for his football knowledge.

SPORT have learned that the pair of Alemany and Planes are positive on Koeman’s work this season, against a lot of difficulty. If it was up to them the Wembley hero would stay for one more season. 

The end of the season has been disappointing but the team fought for the title and won a cup, a much better situation than was imaginable in January. They give Koeman that merit, a coach who was brave to come at one of the club’s worst moments in their history.

Laporta and Koeman will meet again and it will be the moment of truth, when they say that he should stay or go. If Laporta sacks him, Barcelona will have to pay off Koeman’s second year and it’s not a good time economically for that.

Koeman will admit some part in the team’s decay at the end of the season but believes that if he has the club’s confidence he’s capable of leading the change the team needs.
