The Blaugrana club have placed the American in the market and are awaiting a good offer
Barça are pondering what to do with the right-back position after losing out on César Azpilicueta, a player that Xavi Hernández considered a priority. The idea was to bring in the Chelsea captain at a low cost and rotate with Sergiño Dest. The American has not fully convinced the coach and Barça have marked him for sale. The idea is to use the transfer fees earned and bring a low-priced winger with international experience to cover that flank. Meunier, from Dortmund, is one of the options they like but they are still on the lookout for more alternatives. Now, someone will only come in if Dest leaves.
The building of the squad had the first setback with Azpilicueta, a player who decided not to wait any longer in the absence of an agreement between Chelsea and Barça. The full-back feared he was almost out and with only one year left on his contract, he decided to extend his contract with Chelsea to secure his future. Xavi still thinks that he needs a specialist to defend better on that flank, but resources are limited after the signings made thus far and Barça haven't found a good alternative who can replace Azpìlicueta with quality.
As for Dest, Xavi has been monitoring him throughout the preseason. He still has his doubts. That is why they have set a price of about 20 million euros should there be any interest from elsewhere, although if he continues, the coach will handle it and may distribute minutes with Sergi Roberto or Araujo and Koundé, who can also play in that position. It looks Xavi would still prefer to add more quality in that position while the club feels that a lot of money has already been spent and that Dest can be relied upon for one more year. Anything can happen in the remainder of the market though.
