Barça to change goalkeeping policy with the summer sale of Neto

Neto / | sport

The club will turn to youngsters already at the club to support Ter Stegen

It seems absurd to maintain the policy Barcelona have had over the last 5 to 10 years in respect to the second goalkeeper role at the club.

Obviously, it's important to have a good quality back-up because you never know when the second choice stopper could be needed to step up.

But from that to spending millions on goalkeepers (see Claudio Bravo, Jasper Cillessen and Neto, although not all cases are the same) when there are good options in La Masia doesn't seem good business.

For that reason, with the arrival of Joan Laporta as the club's new president, it's one of the issues to resolve. Everything suggests a young goalkeeper with become the backup to Marc ter Stegen, either Iñaki Peña or Arnau Tenas.

Peña has alternated between being the first team's third-choice goalkeeper and the B team's No.1 in recent seasons, while Tenas is younger and was still with the U19s last season.

When Ter Stegen hasn't played, Peña hasn't got a chance. Instead, first Cillessen and later Neto have filled in, be that in the Copa del Rey, La Liga or the Spanish Supercopa.

But everything indicates Neto will leave in search of minutes this summer, as Cillessen did before him, and we will see what the club decide. But given the club's financial situation and the good generation of young goalkeepers at the club, it seems an easy decision to make.
