Barca starting Frenkie de Jong’s contract renewal

| sport

The Catalans will give him a long term deal as he is now key

Barça will begin to tackle the renewal of Frenkie de Jong almost immediately. The commitment to the Dutch player is total and he should become one of the key players in Xavi’s project. His contract expires in 2026 but the idea is to extend his contract by adjusting his salary to help the team's salary limit. More years and with a more sustainable salary to help reorganise the club financially.

Frenkie de Jong's relations with the current board were strained when Barça came close to selling him to Manchester United last summer. The Blaugrana, out of necessity, were willing to give the go-ahead for the deal and that angered the player, who felt under pressure. Now everything has normalised and the player himself acknowledged that his relations with Joan Laporta and the directors have been channelled.

From a sporting point of view, De Jong has taken the expected step forward and for Xavi he is one of the few players now considered non-transferable. He is an undisputed starter and will remain so next season. At 26 years of age, the club believes he has a long way to go and so he will be approached with a long-term contract offer. The Dutchman has always stated that he intends to remain at Camp Nou for many years to come.

Contractually, Barça have also made attempts to bring both him and Ter Stegen's contract in line with market figures. The Blaugrana understand that their salaries are signed and that they have been inherited by the former board, but they see options of being able to adjust them as long as there is a good predisposition and a possible renewal in the future. In the case of the Dutchman, the right time has come to do it and it will be addressed.
