Messi beat Joan Román Riquelme, Juan Martín del Potro and Diego Simeone to the prize

Barcelona star Lionel Messi was named the best Argentine sportsman of the last decade by the Konex Foundation this week.

Messi, 33, beat off competition from footballer Joan Roman Riquelme, tennis players Juan Martin del Porto and Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone.

The Barça forward continues to add to his large collection of individual honours with this latest prize based on the five Ballons d'Or and five European Golden Shoes he's won in the last decade.

With Messi picked as the 2020 winner, he joins a prestigious list of former winners which includes Diego Armando Maradona (1990), tennis player Gabriela Sabatini (2000) and basketballer Emanuel Ginóbili (2010).
