"With the best player in the world, we should have won more Champions Leagues"

Joan Laporta insisted on El Partidazo on COPE that he believes it's possible Lionel Messi could still renew his contract with Barcelona and that the forward is not moved by money.

Laporta, 58, is running to become the Barcelona president for the second time, having previously held the role between 2003 and 2010.

If he is elected, getting Messi to commit beyond the expiration of his current deal (June. 30, 2021) will be one of his first big tasks.

"I last spoke with Leo in October," Laporta said. "I am very grateful for all he's done for Barcelona. I have known him since he was 16, he's an extraordinary person. There's mutual respect and affection.

"We have to be elected to make him an imaginative and credible proposal. Leo loves Barcelona. I want him to be happy again. It's not a question of money, it's about building a competitive team.

"Leo's been misled in the past. He's a winner and he can't stand seeing other teams lift the Champions League. With the best player in the world, we should have won more Champions Leagues."
