Joan Laporta spoke to Barça TV on Friday afternoon

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made it clear that Xavi Hernandez has the club's full backing despite performances in the Champions League.

Barça are on the cusp of exiting the competition in the group stages after picking up just four points in four games, but Xavi's position remains strong.

"There is complete confidence in Xavi," Laporta told Barça TV. "He is a great coach and I am sure things will get better and he will bring us a lot of success in the future.

"He knows the club perfectly, he knows our way of playing and is ideal for Barça. He has our support and he knows it. It is important that he knows there is confidence for things to go well."

Laporta revealed he spoke with Xavi after the draw with Inter on Wednesday: "I went down to his office as I do normally. He was sad and hurting, like all Barça fans. But Xavi has a quality whereby he always knows how to see the positives in any difficult situation.

"I like that and I know he will take the team forward because he is doing a great job. We were all excited about the Champions League, but there are other competitions like LaLiga that we can win."

The Barça president also indicated that "I have spoken with him again recently and he is in good spirits. We will be with him in Madrid for an important game at the Bernabeu. The project moves forward. Obviously, a good result in the Clasico helps that, but whatever happens, the sporting project moves forward because there is complete confidence."
