Barça player ratings: Two points dropped at Las Palmas
Leo Messi was the best player but it was slim pickings
Coutinho, Rakitic and Dembele couldn't change the game
Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Las Palmas on Sunday. Lionel Messi gave Barça the lead but the home side equalised when Jonathan Calleri scored from the penalty spot -- although no one was sure what the spot kick was given for.
Here are the player ratings:
Ter Stegen, 6: Had more work with his feet than his hands. Las Palmas didn’t test him much and he only conceded from a penalty.
Sergi Roberto, 5: Lahoz invented the penalty, claiming Sergi Roberto had fouled Aguirregaray. Played deeper than usual, with Vidal’s inclusion blocking his lane forward.
Samuel Umtiti, 6: Las Palmas didn’t demand much from him. Was booked for a debatable foul outside the area.
T.Vermaelen, 6: Knew his job and did it well. The best thing about the Belgian is he’s happy with his role in the team. Knows where he is, who he is and what’s asked of him.
Lucas Digne, 5: The game required him to be braver, but he lacked a little in attack. Was too cautious about what was going on behind his back. Booked.
S. Busquets, 6: Read the game perfectly, stopping Las Palmas playing the type of football Paco Jemez’s sides like to play.
Paulinho, 4: Unproductive in the first half. Focused on not losing his position but lacked quality on the ball. Didn’t add anything.
Andrés Iniesta, 5: Played closer to Busquets, away from the area where he does most damage. Wasn’t bad, but didn’t influence the game. Had one chance inside the area in the first half which he sent over. Received a standing ovation when taken off.
Aleix Vidal, 4: Valverde opted for Vidal over Dembele. However, he didn’t impress and was taken off early in the second half.
Leo Messi, 6: The win looked more possible when he had the ball but he lacked the support of his teammates. Provoked foul after foul but his best chances came from free kicks.
Luis Suárez, 5: Looked aware that a yellow card would rule him out of the Atletico Madrid game and didn’t play with his usual fight.
Substitutes:
Coutinho, 5: Played the final half an hour and always looked to be direct. Was involved in the game but without giving the sensation of danger.
Ivan Rakitic, 5: Started the game on the bench, which isn’t usual for him. Came on for the last half an hour in place of Paulinho for his 200th Barça appearance.
Dembélé, 5: The game required something different when he came on, but despite trying nothing came off for him.
Lo único que tuvo que hacer es estar atento a las cesiones atrás de la defensa. Tuvo más trabajo con los pies que con las manos. Las Palmas apretó muy poco y de forma imprecisa, pero no perdonó desde los once metros en un penalti que le cogió por sorpresa.
Jugó más retrasado de lo que suele ser habitual. Aleix, primero, Coutinho y Dembélé después, frenaron al de Reus, que, cuando decidió dar un paso al frente, tampoco se mostró demasiado acertado.
Las Palmas no exigió su mejor versión en un partido en el que Umtiti se impuso prácticamente siempre a sus delanteros. El árbitro le castigó con una amarilla por una falta dudosa en la frontal.
Conoce el oficio y lo ejerce sin contemplaciones. Lo mejor del belga es que asume su papel de secundario sin problemas. Sabe dónde está, quién es y qué se le pide. Y obra en consecuencia.
El partido pedía más valentía, pero el francés se prodigó poco en ataque. Estuvo más pendiente de su espalda que de aportar arriba. Por si fuera poco, Mateu Lahoz le castigó con un penalti por manos inexistentes.
Leyó el partido a la perfección, evitando que Las Palmas desplegara el fútbol que ideó Jémez. Partido muy táctico de Busquets, al que le costó, eso sí, conectar con los de arriba. No es él el que debe liderar la maquinaria.
La primera mitad del brasileño fue muy poco productiva. Se dedicó a no perder la posición y ahorrar esfuerzos innecesarios. Le faltó una marcha, algo de desorden, donde se encuentra más cómodo. No aportó nada en un partido soso.
Jugó algo más cerca de Busquets, lo que le alejó de la zona en la que suele hacer más daño. Sin estar mal, influyó poco. Lo intentó con un disparo de rosca que salió fuera en la primera mitad. Ovacionado cuando le cambiaron.
Valverde prefirió a Aleix Vidal antes que a Dembélé en un partido en el que buscó abrir la banda sin demasiado éxito. Cuando lo hizo, sus compañeros le buscaron poco. Se olvidaron de él y acabó dejando su sitio a Coutinho.
El partido subía de pulsaciones cuando le llegaba el balón. Buscó a Suárez cada vez que pudo, pero faltaron compañeros de viaje a su lado. Tocaba hacérselo solo. Provocó dos faltas y marcó en la segunda. Nunca falla. Ni cuando el juego es espeso.
Quizás por ser consciente de que no podía ver la amarilla, mordió menos de lo habitual. Jugó algo más escorado en banda y eso restó trascedencia a su fútbol. Mejoró en la segunda mitad, pero le faltó claridad.
Jugó la última media hora y se situó en la banda derecha, mostrándose siempre vertical. Entró bastante en juego, pero sin dar sensación de peligro. Leyó casi todas las acciones en la frontal de forma errónea.
Inició el partido desde el banquillo, algo nada habitual para él, que lo juega todo. Jugó la última media hora para dar una marcha más al equipo, algo que no había dado Paulinho. Lo logró a medias.
El partido requería algo diferente cuando entró, pero, pese a intentarlo y mostrarse voluntarioso, no le acabó de salir nada.
