The Dutch international is in sublime goal scoring form in a more attacking role
Frenkie de Jong was on target again on Wednesday, scoring the winning goal as Barcelona beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 to make the last eight of the Copa del Rey.
It was the Dutch midfielder's fifth goal of the season. Four of them have come in 2021. He netted in the wins against Huesca and Elche in La Liga and against Real Sociedad in the Spanish Supercopa semifinal.
De Jong is enjoying the more advanced role that coach Ronald Koeman has handed to him.
"I am getting into the area more and for that reason I am scoring more goals," he told Barça TV. "Although it's a little soon to say I have added that aspect to my game."
Aside from his own form, De Jong highlighted Barça's improvement in recent weeks: "We're in a good moment. We're growing every week and in every game and we have to follow that line."
The midfielder was happy to progress in the Copa del Rey with a deserved win: "We made enough chances to score (before going behind). We played well on a difficult pitch and it's an important win."
