Barca defender Jordi Alba says "refereeing and VAR need to improve"

The left-back spoke after the 4-1 win over Alaves on Saturday afternoon

Jordi Alba made his third consecutive appearance since returning from injury in Barcelona's 4-1 win over Alaves at Camp Nou on Saturday.

The Spain defender was happy with the performances but says Barca still need to improve -- but also called for improvements from Spain's referees.

"The balance is positive but we have to improve things," Alba said at the same time as adding "I hope at the end (of the season) we are in a position to win everything. We have a team to do it but we still need to improve a lot."

Asked about some of the whistles from the Camp Nou crowd when Alaves made it 2-1, Alba said it was "respectable. When things don't go well, it's normal, I understand the fans' anger, but I think the team played really well."

Alba continued: "You have to look at the positives: we're top of La Liga and we won out Champions League group without playing well. We just have to improve and we are going to do that."

He also criticised the standard of refereeing in recent weeks, above all in the Clasico and at Anoeta against Real Sociedad: "At the end of the day, the referee is in charge and you have to respect that. I don't think that (against Alaves) he has benefitted or harmed anyone in the result, but it is true that the refereeing and VAR has to improve, the same as we do.

"In football, everyone can complain, although there are more repercussions if it's Barca or Madrid (complaining)."
