Gavi, 18, finally signed a new contract at Barcelona this week until 2026

Barcelona coach Xavi was delighted the club tied Gavi down to a new contract this week until 2026.

"It is great news, the best news this week," Xavi said in a press conference on Friday ahead of the LaLiga game against Elche.

"He is a player for the present and the future. He's already a leader, despite his age. He has character, passion... he's a heart with legs.

"He plays with intensity, is capable of playing anywhere you put him, in different positions. And he has matured, he understands timing, his play is more fluid... great news."

Gavi's previous deal expired in 2023 and it had taken a while for Barça to agree this extension, although Xavi says there were never any doubts.

"No, I didn't suffer," he added. "I knew the situation, I spoke with him, I have a good relationship with (his agent Ivan) de la Pena and the intention was always to stay at Barça, that was his choice, his decision, his will (...) I have not suffered at all."
