Atletico, Barça, Madrid & Sevilla braced for defining week in La Liga title race

The week ends with the four teams facing each other in Europe's most exciting battle for top spot

La Liga is set for one of the tightest finales in recent years. Barcelona, Atletico, Real Madrid and Sevilla will fight until the end of a domestic competition that has defied logic from the start. The first three teams have four 'finals' left, while Sevilla have five, as they play Athletic Club on Monday. If they win, three points will separate the top four with just four games to go across the board.

After a week of contrasting emotions, with the painful defeat to Granada followed by a good comeback at Valencia, Barça host Atletico, the only team who depend on themselves to win the title, obliged to win. Ronald Koeman's side cannot come up short on Saturday. There's no other route to the title. They made it clear at Mestalla that they haven't given up. They will have to show that again against Diego Simeone's side, the league leaders with 76 points, two more than Barça and Real Madrid.

Madrid, meanwhile, have a huge game themselves on Sunday. They will take on Sevilla, the surprise candidate in the title race with 70 points and a game in hand, at Valdebebas. Zidane and Lopetegui will lock horns in a battle that, if Madrid don't win, could open up the league for Barça, as long as they can beat Atletico the previous day.

Some have predicted that whoever ends this weekend top will win the league. That couldn't be further from the truth. So far, the lack of consistency from the front runners has shown that you cannot rely on logic. There is no room for rational football arguments here. The only truth is the mathmatics. And the moment of truth has arrived.
