Araujo's petition to renew with Barça amid Premier League interest

The defender wants to be paid according to his new status in the first team

Ronald Araujo has become Barcelona's leader at the back despite his age. He has burst on to the scene over the last 18 months and the club must now renew his contract.

Barça's priority was to tie down Ansu Fati and Pedri before Araujo but now they can focus on the centre-back, with conversations already underway.

There are differences because Araujo wants to receive a similar amount to those who have recently signed renewals. He doesn't want to be one of the top earners at the club, but he does want his value to be recognised.

His deal runs until 2023 and Barça have always counted on the fact he wants to stay. However, he currently receives one of the lowest salaries in the first team, around 900,000 euros annually.

Araujo understands Barça's situation and doesn't expect a salary in line with the veterans, but he does want to see his new status reflected in his pay. Of course, there is room to negotiate.

Barça have suggested around €6m annually, although other sources suggest the first offer was held that, but in no case was it a definitive proposal, just a starting point.

Araujo and his camp are also keeping an eye on Barça's moves in the market as they eye another centre-back, who could even earn more than him after his renewal.

In addition, given the good relationship with the club, Araujo's agents have always been honest about interest from the Premier League, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United already to spend big this summer if he doesn't renew.

But it's also true that if Barça don't make a good offer, the player could feel the club are putting him on the market. The next weeks will be decisive.
