Araujo and Lenglet to start at the back against Getafe
Eric García's suspension and Gerard Piqué's injury have left Koeman with no other options
The injury picked up by Gerard Piqué and the suspension handed to Eric García, following his late red card in Saturday's game, means that Ronald Koeman will be forced to pair Ronald Araujo and Clement Lenglet against Getafe.
In the pre-match press conference before the game against Athletic Club, the Dutch head coach made it clear that Samuel Umtiti does not feature in his plans for this season. When asked about Lenglet's role in the squad, however, Koeman was more optimistic, stressing that he is the only left-sided centre back they have (with Piqué, García and Araujo all being right footed).
For some, it was surprising to see Eric García picked ahead of Ronald Araujo for the first two games. The Uruguayan was solid for much of last season, and featured in almost everyone's 'predicted XI's ahead of the new arrival from Manchester City. Perhaps Koeman feels that Eric García is sharper at the moment, having recently featured in both the European Championships and the Olympics for Spain.
Lenglet has only played 1 minute so far this season, and it is clear that he is now way behind Araujo in the current pecking order. Barça offered the French centre back to various clubs this summer, but the defender was determined to stay at Camp Nou.
