The Portugal midfielder was trending for the wrong reasons, though

He was removed by Valverde at the break, replaced by Coutinho

Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes was a trending topic on Twitter during te first half of te Catalan side's Copa del Rey semifinal against Valencia on Thursday. The Portuguese international's inclusion in Ernesto Valverde's side was the big talking point.

Gomes, like in many big games this season, was backed by his manager from the start, despite only just returning from a stomach bug. However, his performance disappointed, to the point that he was taken off at half time. Philippe Coutinho, who scored Barça's first goal, took his place.

The display put on by Gomes at the Mestalla, a stadium where he spent many seasons as a home player, was a shipwreck. He wasn't able to link up with his teammates, once again disappoitning Valverde, and he even put Jasper Cillessen's goal in danger with a stray pass. He did not respond to his coach's expectations.

That meant that Gomes became a trending topic on Twitter in Spain, along with #OTDirecto8F and #FelizJueves.
