The defender will be essential in the key games ahead

When Xavi met with Gerard Pique at the end of last season to explain his role in the new project, we didn't imagine this situation. The coach told Pique he would hardly feature. The idea was to sign top centre-backs and Pique would be left behind. The best thing was to leave.

Four months later and Pique is being called on to lead the defence in the vital games to come. The defender is one of the few fit players left at the back.

Pique started the season behind Christensen and Kounde who arrived, plus Eric and Araujo.

Xavi stuck to his word and did not play Pique bar 45 minutes against Viktoria Plzen with the game wrapped up.

He started against Cadiz, and with Araujo and Kounde injured, he featured against Mallorca.

Eric and Gerrard will be partnered against Celta and Inter. For the Clasico, maybe Kounde will be back, but for now, it's the La Masia duo. Once again, all roads lead to Pique.
