Aleix Vidal suffers horrifying ankle injury against Alaves

The right-back is set for a spell on the sidelines after a late challenge at Vitoria

Really bad luck for Aleix Vidal. It's taken him a long time to convince Luis Enrique he can be an important player for Barcelona. He's done so in recent games, though, playing well, providing assists and scoring goals. The right-back was beginning to smile... until a challenge with Theo Hernandez.

There were just five minutes to go and Barça were beating Alaves 6-0. The game was over. Barcelona had already made three changes and Vidal controlled the ball in an area where there was little danger. And then appeared the Basque side's player, Theo Hernandez, who slid in on the former Sevilla man.

Aleix hit the deck and remained on the floor, clearly in a lot of pain. Andres Iniesta was one of the first to realise how serious the injury was and called for a stretcher. His first impression was confirmed by the club's medics. And when television offered images of the Vidal's injured ankle, there was no doubt of the severity. His ankle was almost bent.

After being taken to the dressing room, he was taken to the hospital in Vitoria.
