A new Denis Suarez returns to Camp Nou
The former Barca playmaker has found a home in Vigo where he can shine
He’s not playing as a No 10. Nor 6, nor 8. However, he says “I’ve never felt as comfortable as I do now” and “I play in the place I’ve always wanted”. Denis Suarez has found his best form because, in Chacho Coudet’s 4-1-3-2 system, he’s found a position that exploits all his virtues. He is involved in bringing the ball out. He gives fluidity to the play. He breaks lines. And above all, he assists his team-mates.
Denis Suarez returns to Camp Nou in the middle of the pitch for a Celta in fine form, having started the season trying to avoid the drop and are ending it dreaming of Europe. Denis has found fitness and has played 2,754 minutes this season, over a thousand more than last year.
He’s not scored but the Barca player has been hugely important in assists. At 27 he is mature and playing beside Iago Aspas, Santi Mina and Brais Mendez, who make everything more easy, things are working well. He’s got nine assists, the same as Leo Messi. Only Aspas (11), Llorente (11) and Kroos (10) are ahead of them. Beyond numbers, it’s evident that he’s helping his team greatly.
When he left Barca, everyone had the same sensation. That he would have been capable of making it there. But football goes beyond perceptions, and tiny details make the difference. In his case, for one reason or another he could not carve out his spot in a very demanding squad. He has the chance to show the club they were wrong this weekend, at Camp Nou.
