The centre-back can also play at full-back and is out of contract next summer

Injuries to Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto coupled with Samuel Umtiti's fitness problems have left Barcelona short in defence.

Ronald Koeman and the club are working on signing a versatile centre-back when the transfer window opens in January.

The club's precarious financial position means it's tough to sign anyone and the Catalan club will have to be clever with who they target.

One option is Melayro Bogarde, the talented Dutch man who plays for Hoffenheim and has been targeted by Barça previously.

The teenager is the nephew of Winston Bogarde, who signed for Barça in 1998 under Louis van Gaal and played 41 games over two years at Camp Nou.

Bogarde has the honour of being the youngest Dutchman to play in the Bundesliga, making his debut at 18 years and two months old earlier this year when he came on against Mainz.

Since then, he has made two more appearances in the German top flight and two appearances in the Europa Leagie.

He is naturally a central defender but he can also play on the right, with his versatility making him highly valued by Barça.

In addition, he is out of contract in June 2021 and Hoffenheim are obliged to negotiate a sale in January if they don't want to lose him for free in the summer.

However, Barça are not the only club monitoring the situation. Manchester City, Real Madrid and especially Milan, along with others, are keen.
