Four changes made to Ballon d'Or awards

Four changes made to Ballon d'Or awards

| sport

The individual awards will be changed from now onwards

The Ballon d’Or will be changing before and after 2022. L’Equipe have announced four changes to the next edition of the trophy.

Lionel Messi is the reigning Ballon d’Or winner after beating Robert Lewandowski in 2021.

However from now on it will be done on a season by season basis rather than a natural year. So the 21-22 season will be decided after the end of the season and the World Cup will contribute to the 2023 award.

The other changes are about voting. The lists will no longer be chosen exclusively by France Football and L’Equipe, the Ballon d’Or ambassador Didier Droba will also contribute, as well as the voters from the previous edition who got closest to the final result - Truong Anh Ngoc, Gordon Watson and Karolina Hlavackova.

The votes from FIFA federations will reduce to the 100 top countries instead of the 170 that currently vote. This stops some countries where there is no footballing culture conditioning the final result.

Finally, the criteria to choose a player will be defined by these things: individual performance, team performance and quality of player and sense of fair play.
