The Barcelona midfielder had a great year and won the treble with the club

It’s official. Alexia Putellas is the women’s Ballon d’Or winner for 2021 after winning the treble with Barça Femeni.

The captain and emblem of the team beat her team-mates Jenni Hermoso, Lieke Martens, Irene Paredes and Sandra Panos to the award, along with other players like Sam Kerr and Pernille Harder. Alexia is the first Barcelona Femeni player to win the trophy, in its third edition after Megan Rapinoe (2019) and Ada Hegerberg (2018).

Alexia flew to Paris with her team-mates Hermoso, Paredes and Panos, who are with the Spanish national team at the moment and they will go back there to face Scotland. They met up with Joan Laporta, Lieke Martens and Pedri Gonzalez.

Alexia, a creative midfielders, has stats more befitting of a striker. That, and her fine performances in the run to the treble earned her the award. She’s the second top goalscorer of all-time at the club, 157 goals in 10 seasons, only behind Jenni Hermoso (166).
