Simeone's side will have the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano

After booking their place in the last 16 with a win over Lokomotiv Moscow last week, Atletico Madrid have been paired with holders Liverpool in the next round.

Diego Simeone's side will have to beat last season's winners if they want to prolong their stay in a competition they came so close to winning in 2014 and 2016, losing to Real Madrid in the final in each year.

It's not been an easy season so far for Atletico, who lost recently to Barcelona and have drawn far too many games in the league already, although a lot could change between now and February, when the last 16 begins.

Atletico will host the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano. It's a special stadium for Liverpool, who were crowned European champions there earlier this year when they beat Tottenham in the final.

Jurgen Klopp's side, who are currently running away with the Premier League, 10 points clear of second-placed Leicester City, will stage the second leg at Anfield.
