Suarez's winner downed Real Valladolid as Atletico sealed the title on the final day

Luis Suarez struck a second-half winner as Atletico Madrid beat Real Valladolid 2-1 to seal the La Liga title on the final day of the season.

Oscar Plano gave Valladolid, who were relegated with the defeat, a surprise lead but Angel Correa levelled to set the stage for Suarez to be the hero.

Atletico needed to win because Real Madrid also came from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1, finishing on 84 points, two fewer than their city rivals.

It's the second title Atletico have won under Diego Simeone. The first also arrived on the final day of the season, in 2014 when they drew 1-1 with Barcelona at Camp Nou.

In the last 10 years, Barca have won the league five times, Real Madrid have won it on three occasions and Atletico have now won it twice.

LUIS SUAREZ, CAMPEON

Suarez joined Atletico last summer from Barça and has fulfilled his objective: to remain competitive away from Camp Nou.

The Uruguayan scored 21 goals to help Atletico win the title and also set up three goals. Two of his goals were vital in recent weeks, securing wins against Osasuna and Valladolid.
