Athletic's Iñigo Martinez speaks about Barcelona's summer interest

The Catalan club made an offer for the centre-back during the transfer window

Iñigo Martinez says he is "calm" about going into the final year of his contract with Athletic Club. The centre-back spoke after his team's 1-4 win at Eibar on Sunday and assured that he is "happy" at Sam Mames.

The reality, however, is that Martinez could have left Athletic in the summer. Barcelona were interested and offered €15m plus €5m in add-ons, but Athletic wanted more.

Asked about the negotiations, he said: "I know how the world of football works, a lot of bla, bla, bla and people speaking without knowing (what they're speaking about.) I am happy, I feel good, it has not affected much."

The former Real Sociedad defender gave no futures and what the future holds for him beyond this season.

"I don't think I should respond now," he added. "It's in the club's hands and my agent's."

The doubt is whether Barça will try and sign him again. At the moment, they are 'overbooked' in defence with Ronald Araújo, Eric García, Andreas Christensen, Jules Koundé and Gerard Piqué.
